ASP.NET MVC Design Philosophy This week the first preview of the ASP.NET MVC framework was released to the web as part of the ASP.NET 3.5 Extensions CTP Preview. It's been a few months since we started coding and as the lead developer on the project I'd like to share my thoughts on the design of this framework. This isn't a post about why MVC is great. Instead, it's a post about what we did to make MVC happen in ASP.NET.The MVC Snake One of the design strategies we used in ... (more)

Most people on installing .NET 3.5 on the server "expect" an entry for  v3.5 under the ASP.NET version Tab in IIS manager. And not finding that entry start panicking. If you have been one of those read on. The more tech savvy folks try to run aspnet_regiis -i from the v3.5 framework folder... but even that is missing :) That brings us to the question What exactly is ASP.NET 3.5 ? Take a look at the v3.5 framework folder you will not find most of the files needed for ASP.NET to run like aspnet_isapi... (more)

What's new in ASP.NET 3.5? ASP.NET AJAX ASP.NET AJAX lets you create more efficient, more interactive, and highly-personalized Web experiences that work across all the most popular browsers. Starting with the .NET Framework 3.5 release, all of these features are built-in with ASP.NET, which means you no longer have to download and install a separate ASP.NET AJAX setup when building or deploying applications. When you create a new ASP.NET application or web-site in VS 2008 that targets the .NET 3.5 fra... (more)

Scott Hanselman's Computer Zen - IPrincipal (User) ModelBinder in ASP.NET MVC for easier testing

It's pretty straight forward, but this Controller knows too much. It's reaching into implicit parameters. The id was passed in, but the User is actually a property of the Controller base class and ultimately requires an HttpContext. Having this method "know" about the User object, and worse yet, having the User object go reaching into HttpContext.Current makes this hard to test. I'd like to have the convenience of passing in the User (actually an IPrincipal interface) when I want to test, but when I'm r... (more)

I’ve been working on the web site for the Hampton Roads .NET Users Group, and I really wanted to do some work with ASP.NET MVC.  So I created a new MVC application, and decided to test it against my host.  I published, and went to the site.  Configuration errors.  That’s never a good sign.  Turns out my host does not have the MVC extensions installed. However!  My host supports ASP.NET 3.5, so it is possible to run MVC applications.  I just needed to make a few quick configuration changes. In Visual St... (more)

An Overview of ASP.NET 3.5 and Visual Studio 2008 Introduction On November 19, 2007, Microsoft officially released the ASP.NET version 3.5 and Visual Studio 2008. Like with the progression from ASP.NET 2.0 to 3.0, the features in ASP.NET 3.5 are additive, meaning that the core assemblies installed from the .NET Framework version 2.0 are still used by the 3.0 and 3.5 versions. The In short, ASP.NET 3.5 doesn't change or take away or break any functionality, concepts, or code present in 2.0 - it simply a... (more)
