Getting 503 errors on IIS 7 with custom application pool (Integrated Mode)? - LA.NET [EN]

So today I’ve though about giving IIS’ integrated mode a shot…The idea was simple: create a new application pool, configure it to use ASP.NET 4.0 in integrated mode and then associated it to an existing web application. The problem: The first request would always kill the application pool and it returned a 503 error to the browser. IIS Manager seemed to confirm that the pool was really dead: WTF? I’ve read a couple of posts on IIS 7 and 503, but none helped. Then I tried one more thing: I’... (more)

ASP.NET 4.0 ScriptManager Improvements .NET Framework 4 Beta 2 has been out for a little while now. There are some subtle improvements to the ScriptManager control in ASP.NET 4.0 that few have picked up on yet. Allow me to introduce you to them! First, let me say that this is strictly about features in the server-side ASP.NET ScriptManager control, not the Ajax library in general. Also – if you do not use the ASP.NET Ajax library but you ar... (more)

ASP.NET 4.0: Writing custom output cache providers

Until now we can use ASP.NET default output cache. We don’t have any option to write our own output cache mechanisms. ASP.NET 4.0 introduces extensible output cache – programmers can write their own output cache providers. In this posting I will show you how to write your own output cache provider and give you my sample solution to download. (more)

Have you ever needed to quickly spawn a web server against a local folder to preview a web application? If not, what would you say you do here? This is actually quite common for me since I receive a lot of zip files containing web applications which reproduce a bug. After I unzip the repro, I need a way to quickly point a web server at the folder and run the web site. A while back I wrote about a useful registry hack to do just this. It adds a right click menu to start a web server (C... (more)

Html Encoding Nuggets With ASP.NET MVC 2

In a recent blog post, I introduced ASP.NET 4’s new HTML Encoding code block syntax as well as the corresponding IHtmlString interface and HtmlString class. I also mentioned that ASP.NET MVC 2 would support this new syntax when running on ASP.NET 4. In fact, you can try it out now by downloading and installing Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2. I’ve also mentioned in the past that we are not conditionally compiling ASP.NET MVC 2 for each platform. Instead, we’re building System.Web.Mvc.dll aga... (more)

VS 2010 ASP.NET 4.0 RedirectPermanent does a 301 and not 302 Hi, As I was reading a white-paper on changes in VS 2010, ASP.NET 4.0, I came across this new method that the Response object exposes – ‘RedirectPermanent’. This issues a ‘HTTP 301 – moved permanently’ as against a ‘HTTP 302 – moved temporarily’ that was issued by the old Redirect method both in traditional and MVC – yes I know, in MVC there is a way to create our own custom action result that does a HTTP 3... ASP.NET 4.0 and ClientID Mode In this post I will be talking about a new enhancement in ASP.NET 4.0.It is now possible to set the name of your controls ClientID attribute, thanks to the ClientIDMode property. Developers requested a better way of setting names of the web server controls and with the new version of ASP.NET 4.0, this is now a reality. We can demonstrate this with a new project.I will be using C# and VS 2010. 1) Launch Visual Studio 2010 2) Create a new website, select ASP.NET Web si... (more)

Targeting earlier .NET frameworks 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 using Visual Studio 2010 The multi-targeting feature of Visual Studio 2010 allows web developers to develop web applications targeting ASP.NET 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0. Our earlier posts here and here describe some of the multi-targeting capabilities of Visual Studio 2010. Targeting frameworks 2.0, 3.0 or 3.5 using VS 2010 requires 3.5 Sp1 to be installed With VS 2010, only the latest 4.0 version of the .NET framework will be installed on your machine as p... (more)

One of the features of ASP.NET 4.0 is built-in support for Bi-directional URL Routing. With VS 2010 Beta 1 out for sometime, I dig into more details with some hands-on work. In this article I will show the implementation of URL routing with .NET framework 4 Beta 1. It will also cover benefits of URL routing and changes with ASP.NET 4.0. Mainly we will be seeing how ASP.NET 4.0 makes things easier by implementing bi-directional routing with the help of components like RouteTable, PageRouteHandler and Expr... (more)
